Competition Winners

Image
Thanks so much to everyone who took part in our art competition!  We really loved seeing all your creativity, and managed to raise over £100 for WaterAid UK.  The two winners of the competition are... (imaginary drumroll) ....  Inés Buetow We loved the movement evoked by this digital art-piece. The lino-cut style makes the water depicted appear as though its really flowing. The monochromatic nature of the design is also incredibly striking.  Moïse Mbarga-Abega We loved  Moïse's piece, "Fists", ability to capture the spirit of protest and defiance in a single image. The anonymity of the subjects adds to its power and emotional depth.  Thanks once again for all submissions and a huge well done to the winners from everyone on the UCL WASH team.

Image
We have been loving all the work that has so far been submitted for our art competition! So no one misses out on the chance to submit their work we have decided to extend the deadline, meaning there's still time to get your submission in if you haven't already and have your shot and winning your choice of a   £ 2 0 Pizza Pilgrims vouche r or  a   £ 2 0 National Book Token. To help get your creativity going, here is one of our favourite submissions so far:   Fists (2018) by  Moïse  Mbarga-Abega This is an unpublished shot from  Moïse's work on the Black History Month exhibition. We loved the photo's simple, aesthetic framing and the empowering nature of this image. The raised fist has connotations of protest and pride and we feel  Moïse has captured these feelings in this piece.  Remember, the UK government doubles every donation it receives, so please do think about donating via :   https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/wash-society-ucl .

Why We Work with WaterAid UK

Image
UCL WASH works with WaterAid UK to raise awareness for the UN Development Goal of improving access to clean water and improving sanitation for all. Here's why we think they're such great organisation.   1. WaterAid argue that water, toilets and hygiene are a human right Extreme poverty cannot end until clean water, toilets and hygiene are a normal part of daily life for everyone, everywhere. Yet 785 million people live without clean water close to home, and 2 billion don't have a decent toilet of their own. And climate change is making the situation worse.  Women in particular waste precious time walking long distances to collect dirty water. Girls drop out of school because there are no private toilets to manage their periods. And approximately 289,000 children per year do not live to see their fifth birthday because of diarrhoeal diseases caused by dirty water and poor sanitation.  WaterAid focus all three essentials: clean water, improved sanitation and proper hygiene

Welcome to the UCL WASH Blog!

Welcome to the UCL WASH Blog! We are a student organisation looking to promote awareness of the UN development goal of improving access to clean water, providing quality sanitation and adequate hygiene across the world. Over 790 million people do not have sufficient access to drinking water. In association with WaterAid, we are looking to work to raise awareness of the spread of diseases, poverty, and environmental impact which a lack of clean water causes.
